Introduction to the Nervous System
The nervous system is a complex collection of nerves and specialized cells known as neurons that transmit signals between different parts of the body. It is essentially the body's electrical wiring. Structurally, the nervous system has two components: the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system.

Anatomy of a Neuron
Neurons are the basic unit of the nervous system and nervous tissue. A neuron consists of two major parts: a cell body and nerve processes.
Key Terms for the Neuron
1. Synapses: Send electrical impulses to neighboring neurons.
2. Myelin Sheath: Cover the axon and work like insulation to help keep electrical signals inside the cell, which allows them to move more quickly.
3. Axon: Transfers electrical impulse signals from the cell body to the synapse.
4. Soma: The cell body which contains most of the cell’s organelles
5. Nucleus: Contains the cell’s DNA
6. Dendrites: Receive electrical impulses from neighboring neurons.

How a Neuron Functions and Communicates
Neurons communicate with each other via electrical events called 'action potentials' and chemical neurotransmitters. At the junction between two neurons (synapse), an action potential causes neuron A to release a chemical neurotransmitter.
